Port-en-Bessin

Small authentic fishing port, steeped in history...

Located in the heart of the landing beaches, between Arromanches and Pointe du Hoc, Port en Bessin is the largest fishing port in Normandy.

Here everyone lives to the rhythm of the tides and the round trips of the fishing boats: Norman lobsters, scallops, sea bass and many other fish are offered on the auction stalls where there is a particular effervescence.

After strolling along the quays, climb the path on the wild cliff where stands the Vauban Tower, built in 1694 to watch over the corsairs and prevent possible English invasions.

In 1944, Port en Bessin, located between two landing zones, Omaha Beach and Gold Beach, became the head of the network for the pipeline system supplying the allies with fuel.

To see: the Museum of the underwater wrecks of the Landing where are exposed tanks, remains of planes, documents, films and personal objects found in the seabed.

Not to be missed: the night market and the fireworks every Friday evening during the summer.
